A big thank you to @jasoninquires for taking in more E3 coverage than most people can handle over the past three days to stumble upon this gem.

The Current State of Skylanders

As part of YouTube's annual E3 coverage, Geoff Keighley brings on big name guests to find out more about their products and where their companies are headed.

Today one of his guests was Activision's CEO, Eric Hirshberg.

Let's roll the clip:

“That’s a franchise we’re still servicing and interested in, in different ways obviously, but that’s something we’re still behind.” ~ Eric Hirshberg, Activision CEO

While there were no definite statements made, here is my quick take on the quote:

They are not planning to pull the plug on the Skylanders franchise as a whole anytime soon, but we may not see more of what we've seen in the past.

We know that we still have Skylanders Academy (Seasons 2 & 3) as well as the Skylanders mobile game coming up. As for console play though, I don't think they have much in the works.

Interpret it how you like, but that's all we know for now.

  • Joshua G.

With this in mind, I’ve got a feeling they’re gonna pull off more spinoffs than ever before.

  • Erich

I don’t hear good words in this. I imagine we are about done with games.

    • JimyMahr

Yeah, “in different ways”. That sounds like the end of figures at least.

It’s a shame. Skylanders got to big for it’s britches. Starting with a reasonable 32 10 dollar figures ballooning to the mess that was Trap Team, (which in Activision’s defense, they tried to right by cutting down the roster in the very next game).

Hard to imagine where they will go next. I still like the idea of Imaginators 2 3 4 etc and keeping their roster of Skylanders as supporting characters. They have quite the IP here, it would be terrible not to use it for video games.

    • Imani Richards

Yeah, his studdering makes me think he’s unsure about Skylanders future. We’ll at least I’ve enjoyed Skylanders since the beginning.

  • alterku

All I really want is more game to use the figures in. I’d like to see a Skylanders game that has no figures launched that are game-specific, and if necessary just release any existing ones in stores they happen to have idle stock of to make newcomers happy.

    • JimyMahr

      This.
I haven’t played any character in more than one game, aside from SuperChargers. That means I have Stealth Elfs, Eruptors, Spyros etc. that I have never used, but would love to in a basic Skylander game without the gimmicks. Plus, sprinkle in some of the old gimmicks… The games have always been quite good, I doubt no new figures would change that.

    • Imani Richards

That’s a great idea that I was thinking also. Just Skylanders games only with no figures because most of us Skylanders fans has enough figures with room to level up.

      • Dan

There are glitches in Trap Team and super chargers that let you level up and unlock powers incredibly fast all my 400+ Skylanders from Superchargers back to Spyros Adventure are Max level and all powers unlocked ! Let me know if you want to know how! There also a massive coin glitch in Imaginators too lol

        • Commander BB Shockwave

You don’t need glitches, money just falls from the sky in Trap Team – villain bounties and skystone smash matches give you 1000 gold or more so often, that sometimes I can level up all abilities with one character by just playing one level with them.

          • Dan

Glitches are way faster you never used them or you’d know that and how many Skylanders do you have if you have all of them like I do it’s a massive waste of time and effort playing through on everything.

          • Commander BB Shockwave

I have all characters from all games, plus variants. I don’t buy duplicates (variants/Lightcore/Series 2-3/Elite) of a character unless I like to play with that character, and getting from zero to full is part of the fun of playing the game. Just yesterday I resetted Rocky Roll as I wanted to try his other path, played the Golden Desert, and by the end of it got enough money to buy ALL his upgrades.

          • Zym

I’m just going to agree with everyone. Jimy – I’m in the same boat, so many toys that we only really play with the current game (but we do have a box of favorites). Dan, it’s always fun to find glitches but they can also take away some of the fun and of course they can add to it. Not glitches, but I know you can play the darkest reach forever in trap team and in superchargers you can just keep starting a new nightmare game and play all the elemental challenges in that chest. I agree with BB, it’s just fun too play through with a character and just level them up the old fashioned way. Sometimes the kiddos friends come over and they don’t want to play with a character they can’t do anything with so they use characters that need leveling up. Dark and Light Giants would be fun to see as well as more uses for the traps and vehicles. I got it how about we combine a bunch of the items just to be super crazy. We can have a set of 4 (keep it small) new giants that have no associated element but have a trap insert on their back. This will use the swap force knowledge of what trap is inserted into which giant and that giant gets a new look and upgrade path per element. Both the trap and character level up, since we all know more info can fit in those traps. I would also like to see an elite imaginator crystal, but I know elite is reserved for the original 32.

          • Dan

From my experience kids don’t level them up or even unlock powers from what I’ve seen from all the second hand Skylanders I’ve brought Not One was ever level 20 with all powers unlocked . I know what your saying about it taking the some of the fun out of it but it’s no fun getting one shot killed in nightmare mode with a level 1 with no powers it sux swaping weaklings out every second and if you want too you can reset it if you really want too waste time ! I’d rather enjoy the games story without the stuffing around with The fairies all day!

          • Commander BB Shockwave

Well, I am close to 40, so I am not “most kids”. 😀 Yeah I got a lot of second hand Skylanders that were not levelled up, but I also got level 20 ones with tons of money… does not matter as I reset them anyway so I can explore their developing powers myself. Some characters only truly start to work well or shine with some later upgrades – like Zook’s cactus path with the MIRV Mortar power that lets you plant them everywhere on the map! 🙂

          • Stayforeverskylanders

Those fairies are greedy and I always thought fairies were meant to be above all that. Interesting hearing about all these glitches. The only one I knew about was using Sky Diamond in Trap Team on the Chompy themed mini game.

          • Dan

Chomp chest coin glitch on the first stage of Trap team and the Superchargers orb cupboard glitch for max level instantly for at least 2 to 4 Skylanders per turn but you have to delete and reinstall your save for that one to work for example Xbox stores your save online so you can disconnect from the internet use all your orbs from the cupboard and delete your game connect to the internet an download your old save and start over you can do a collection in a day unfortunately it only works for pre Superchargers Skylanders not Imaginators obviously.

          • Stayforeverskylanders

            Thanks for the info. 😸

          • Commander BB Shockwave

Agreed on Dark/Light Giants. Of course, they could not make them work backwards though, but I’d like such characters. Trap Team sometimes has boulders lying around, but otherwise there was not much left for Giants to do in the later games.

          • Zym

But they walk around looking cool, leaving footsteps behind killing any chompy that walks into them. Plus, besides picking up boulders, they are bomb worthy as well, you can punch through any bomb (not missile bomb) wall. One thing I really wanted to see was the shrink ray in Super Chargers to keep the character small, that would have been fun.

          • Dan

There is only 39 Skylanders that I don’t have ,all the overpriced variants basically and 5 creation crystals left to find it took me a couple of days worth of glitches to level them up and unlock all power paths I love playing on nightmare with my super army and watching half of them die in battle lol

        • Imani Richards

Really? Thanks Dan, tell me how to level up all my figures on Trap Team. I have not yet made it to Superchargers and Imaginators yet.

    • Dan

I want some dark and light Giants and Swap Force that would be amazing! and a reboot of all Spyros games in 1080p and 4K then just add a dark and light Giant and swappers into the game while it’s being remade oh one last thing makes everything cross compatible so that Imaginators would work in the old games and so on!

  • Steve Sweitzer

With the next game being mobile and RPG sounds much like Light Seekers. I do not think any Skylanders game will be successful without the characters. The margin of the characters is what has kept the game around. In Activision’s Q1 report, there is not one word of Skylanders, except which line the character sales are listed. When I put everything is perspective, I have to say Activision is moving on. But I do see the brand being sold as they did with Guitar Hero. They did contract the mobile game to another company.

    • Steve Sweitzer
      • Dan

Dammmmm that’s what I assumed thanks man !

      • Imani Richards

        Good info Steve. Thanks!

      • Erich

Ok. You’re making me feel old. That’s so blurry I can’t read it.

      • Enigma

It says that Imaginators sold less than SuperChargers…and SuperChargers did REALLY bad. Huh. Here I was thinking that Imaginators was doing well, even good. Hmm. Well, I guess its just a waiting game now.

        • Steve Sweitzer

I thought so too about Imaginators. Lego Dimensions took a huge cut from Skylanders. SuperChargers sales was down 66% from Trap Team, yes sold 1 game for every 3 Trap Team. I know those numbers are based upon retailer orders, the only explanation I can see is retailers don’t have much inventory as they ordered conservatively or just no product available. The video is not very positive as CEO’s normally use adjectives to describe their product/projects. I wonder if things will change after the announcement of Lego Dimensions being cancelled. Is this the reason the mentioning of “interested in”? I do know TFB is working on an announced project. I don’t think that is Skylanders. I hope so but just dont see it.

      • Zym

Bringing up an old post of mine, but this is why I wished they moved to high quality cards. Cheaper for them and us and saves floor space. If I could replace all our toys with high quality cards with an awesome picture in front and bio and stats on the back, of course I would (okay, there are some figures I’d want to keep). Much easier to transport as well. The only other nice thing would be faster character load time and multiple portal support.

        • Commander BB Shockwave

Heck no. Part of the fun in collecting is to get these awesome toys. How many other games give you toys of your characters? Don’t you wish you had toys of say, Kratos, Master Chief, all the Diablo playeable characters?
I was collecting Skylanders from all lines even back when I had no console and could only play the first game on PC. Because they are fun toys.

          • Zym

True, but we’d be more motivated to use our entire collection if they were handier. The 300+ toys live in a different room and we only grab a small subset to use at a time usually the ones related to the current game. Love the toys, just a little crazy. They live in tupperware containers so we grab a box or to play with at a time.

          • Commander BB Shockwave

I have them all displayed on a table for lack of better storage, but plan to put them in a glass case someday alongside my Transformers. 🙂

          • JimyMahr

I’ll give you backing on that, Mr. Zym. Imaginators could have been great with packs of cards a la Battlecast. Senseis in card form, Imaginators in card form, Parts in card form. Buy a pack for 5 bucks, 10 cards, 1 Sensei, 1 “creation crystal”, 8 parts. With the duplicates raising stats and keeping the rarities. Then each update of Imaginators is a new Xpac of cards, plus Imaginators 2 would use all those cards as well. (Activision, I am totally open for consultation, drop me a line 😉👍🤑)

Figures are great, but I have an underside of a king sized bed filled with Skylanders. Part 7 would start actually cut into living space. At that point I’m guessing the wife will say it’s her or the Skylanders. Lose/lose if I ever heard one.

          • Stayforeverskylanders

If Skylanders 7 was made it could be like the 2D levels in the library in Superchargers that switch into 3D mode levels (like Paper Mario Wii) when needed. The figures could do the same. They are 2D and appear 2D on the screen but turn 3D with the press of a button and are 3D on the screen also. This would also help with storage (win/win).

    • Casen Woody

I want Skylanders to go back to its roots. With the old graphics and characters and gameplay (just keep jumping). Superchargers and Imaginators were horrible to me.

  • Dan

The more blue chests you get the more powerful the weapons become!! How’s a club that does 132 attack power after 7 chests from imaginite mines??lol nightmare is easy!!

  • Dan

Although Skylanders are incredibly popular the franchise is not making Activision the money it used to ,there is a massive second hand market for used Skylanders out there these days and Activision makes nothing from it ,most people don’t buy there Skylanders new anymore so despite the games popularity Activision just isn’t selling figures like they used too and less stores are stocking them after being left holding masses of left over inventory from Superchargers there has been a definite wind down in the numbers of Imaginators stock perticularly with these wave 5 figures, once they sellout there is very little restocking going on if at all and I’m concerned that the last few crystals will end up being like yawn traps if stores don’t order new creation crystals soon!! I’ve also noticed there is a lot of starter packs but hardly any range of crystals or Senseis on shelves this is leaving Skylanders open to scalpers again and Activision don’t care unless there is more money to be made unfortunately.
We may see a Skylanders reboot in years ahead it’s sad to see it go but my bank account needs a break and I think a lot of people felt that way after Trap team and walked away from the franchise before Superchargers and Activision must have expected Superchargers to do better than it did with the number of figures they flooded shelves with !
The other problem was there was to much competition during Superchargers Activision tried to counter this by increasing the number of so called Variants massively but none of it worked there are still hundreds of Nitro stealth stingers and Easter Superchargers on shelves as a result and Activision didn’t like all the wasted money on unsold toys and so our story ends until the second hand market dries up and all the store shelves are empty I don’t see Activision bringing Skylanders Back for a few years at least !

  • Stayforeverskylanders

Am going through buying Skylander figure withdrawal. 😳 Then I look at my amazing collection and it cheers me up. 😁

  • Casen Woody

I love the battle mode and PvP. I would love it if they made a digital only game that included all of that on all platforms. Me, my friends, and brothers are sick of having to go back to Swap Force!

    • Zym

Definite miss in Imaginators, how fun would it be to challenge other in PvP with your own creation. Maybe it can be an add on.

      • JimyMahr

I was championing that when Imaginators was released. My biggest issue with Skylanders is the complete lack of innovation in Online play… four players, online, scale difficulty with # of players. Genius. (Yes, I know about switching characters being a problem. Just Overwatch it and your stuck with your current choice until KO’d or level complete.)

        • Zym

Switching characters wouldn’t be a problem if each player gets their own portal. I’d love to see single player portals it would de-complicate everything. You would even be able to put on two characters and have a swap out feature between the two which means quicker character load time since the background player can be loaded behind the scenes.

          • JimyMahr

In online multiplayer, switching could be a huge problem, especially if the charcaters were still tethered to each other, then lag from the switch, then, and the main reason I said no switching in a level is the “I killed a chompy, time to bring in Tuff Luck, I killed another chompy, time to bring in Jet Vac, I killed another chompy, time to bring in……” kind of players.

As for the swap out feature…. that is pure genius. 💡If the portal has the capacity to write two characters in a two player game, keeping track of one at a time, but having one ready in the background should have easily been a constant feature in the games.

          • Zym

I’ll agree, it was just a quick thought that I figured I’d put out there, but you thought that one through more than me. I still like the single player portal though. You can each load your own car, the magic items can be specific to characters (maybe) and for the keep in the box people (not really me except Eon’s) you can each load a boxed character.

  • Commander BB Shockwave

So whatever happened to Krakatoa? That leaked image looks too good to be a fake. Plus I doubt any troll has that much time and effort to just troll the Skylanders fans…

    • Dan

      It’s an Imaginator lol

      • Commander BB Shockwave

No, there are no parts like that in the game. Sensei belts especially not.

        • Dan

Maybe parts they will add later or just photo shopped!? But it says it’s an Imaginator under the name in the picture.

          • Commander BB Shockwave

No, that was already shown to be the beta environment used for testing – google for early pictures of other Imaginators, Tri-Tip is shown as “Earth Smasher” for example. I am fairly sure that Krakatoa is real. The Skylanders community is rather small and most fans are really young – not the sort of audience some troll would want to troll with a hoax. Most people outside the fans would never know about it.

  • Dan

That’s where all the Traps went!!! My insane collection just got slightly bigger $4 for a life yawn lol nothing for a fire yawn and I traded a few Traps and doubles for a light yawn sweet deal check out the overkill ! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/774d74f053a6a98b2cfa3592f10dc87c785d10e8025be975637f8fca3c7cbce3.jpg

toys-to-life has all pretty much died now. However Activision has real skin in the game, as opposed to Disney who closed the entire publishing business, and Warner Bros. who will keep making the same Lego game over and over. Activision is a game publisher and they don’t make movies, so when your billion dollar cash cow slows it’s milk you don’t simply abandoned it. It seems mobile is the new platform for toys-to-life. So between the Netflix show and a new “games as a service” mobile game that is how Activision will continue to pump golden milk out of the old girl.

But this is Activision! They brought back Guitar Hero when that genre was long dead. Unless someone knows better Toys for Bob is still around and they have to be doing something? I would imagine we will see a new console game in the next couple of years. Vicarious Visions is now a slave studio and the Bala bros. have jumped ship with their huge buyout money and will go do something else. So I think even if Skylanders does come back and even if the toys elements stick around, I think it will be exclusively a Toys for Bob game that will NOT be annual. If the mobile game tanks and the Netflix show tanks, well then goodbye Skylanders.

  • Joshua G.

Wishing for some Lost Imaginite Mines news to come soon.

  • Tage S. Rasmussen

Just got a notification in the Battlecast game that the servers will shut down from September 1st. 2017 :(.

  • Zym

Not Skylanders news…but an easy tie in. Crash Sensei gets to watch from the sidelines as I play the Crash trilogy released today.

  • ProfChesterTQ

    Skylanders MMORPG
…should be the next version, imho??
