As I hope most of you know by now, I am always trying to help you and get you all the information you want/need about all things Skylanders.
While I know many of you are hardcore collectors who buy everything that's released, I know that some of you are more selective in your purchases. For some this is by choice, others are limited by spacial or financial constraints. Whatever the case may be, you have to make choices.
For this reason I am considering starting up a new series in which I would review characters and/or figures.
But, in order for this series to reach its greatest potential, I need to know:
[box]When you're choosing between Skylanders, what do you need to know?[/box]Do you just go by looks?
Do you want to know how they fight?
Do you want to know how much health they have once they're all leveled up?
What questions do you need answers to to help you make your decision?
Let me know in the comments below or you can always send me a private email here.
I myself look for ANY exclusives. I don’t buy regular unless there are no exclusives.
If there are two exclusives, I get the cooler-looking one.
I have a Skylanders guide. I don’t get a Skylander if the upgrades sound dumb.
I don’t really care about health unless their attacks are stupid.
This is my opinion on your matter…
I only get all the special characters. Giants, Swappables, Trap Masters, Vehicles, and Forgotten 8. I also just keep all the Superchargers I end up with ????
I go for everything, but I’m also new to the series. I’m a bit spoiled in that I usually get to play a game with most of the figures already in-hand. When I catch-up though, it’d be nice to know what to expect from each character and what the minimum is to access EVERYTHING in the game. I’d rather start playing a game knowing I have enough to access each part of it. It might also help to know what sort of bonuses you get based on the size and contents of your collection. For example, does a patina variant count as a different figure that’s labeled as “special” and will it help unlock experience boosts/bonuses?
Being the buyer for a seven year old…we mostly go by looks.
I usually go by looks and how they fight in-game. When we first get our images for the new ones, I always have a few that I really like the look of from the start. Others I don’t learn to like until I find what their gameplay is like. Happy to give you my input!
I would say gameplay and looks really factor into the buy.
For a collector, the looks are key. But for the gaming side, you can’t play as someone who looks cool but plays like a badger duct taped to your controller.
I try to find the ones who will help me get a 100 %of the game done and just one of each element. So I would like to know witch one is the strongest. I also buy every spyro character I can get my hands on.
Looks and cool attacks are key for my kids. Since I also want to open everything in the game, the best special features when comparing two characters of the same element (for example, should I pick Roller Brawl over Frightful Fiesta for Superchargers?)
Our 8-year old daughter likes to have all the female characters. Our family gets enough to play the game to 100% completion. These first characters are mainly chosen for their fighting ability, we prefer long-distance attacks over hand-to-hand fighting. It is helpful to know about max health, but not our first priority. But in the end I will often pick up any extra characters long after release dates when they are on sale, just to add to the collection, but I try not to double up on characters. I’m rather disappointed that for the new superchargers game we’ve had to get gill grunt and trigger happy again, and that stealth elf was included in the starter kit once again.
I usually decide by looks, then the characters play style (Melee vs ranged, fun-ness etc.) I also have a daughter and want to make sure she has some women characters to play as. I don’t care how powerful a character is but I know some people do. If there is a character that looks very cool, I’ll buy it and just put in in the display case.
I usually want to know what the minimum I need to get 100% completion is.
Maybe a themed collection guide? For example; all the dragons, or all the quadrapeds, the fastest of each element etc.
Like a few others I go mostly by exclusive, that’s what I look for mostly is the variants/exclusives, and second I go by looks, normally picking up extra characters that look cool depending on the promotions, but would eventually like 100%!
Another big thing I look for is what do I need to 100% the game, i.e. Do I need a giant to open chests or if I need one element of each new character what not
1. What I need to do everything in the game.
2. Something that looks cool and can be had for a reasonably cheap price.
Currently I am a collector trying to get 4 core skylanders from trap team and 2 color variants from giants, since I try to get anyone I dont have, the best suggestion I currently have is information on moves and abilitys for the skylanders and if possible videos showing both upgrade paths and displaying how they function kind of like they do in the guide books, some charecters look awesome but could be a little disappointing if stuck with due to lack of funds to get one you would enjoy more. The charecter page you have now are great just imagine them with stats, move set lists and short vids on how they play. The suggestions you stated above like what is there max health and how they fight are great additions to the site that would be greatly appreciated by the seasoned collector and the new comers to the franchise.
SuperChargers is the first skylander game that I have been able to collect from the get go. For the previous games it was what was every available at retailers and sites like ebay/kijiji.
In SuperChargers I am trying to collect every vehicle and skylander. However, if I had financial restrictions I would choose skylanders based on their looks and move set, like you stated above. I enjoy the more speedy skylanders as opposed to bulky ones. Hot Streak and Splat are two that come to my mind. As well ones that are unique looking like Fiesta and Splat. Other than the speed of the character the actually game play doesn’t have a big impact on if I would purchase the skylander.
As for putting down the max health and possibly other attributes for the skylanders, it’s a great idea. Other than the guide book there is nowhere else I can find that has that kind of information. I would greatly appriciate those new attributes being listed, and because I haven’t said it before, the new site look is a job well done.
Thanks for everything Matt!
i usually buy them by looks and element (my favorite element is air but in superchargers my favorite skylander was Splat) 🙂
I’ve only got Swap Force and SuperChargers. But I choose exclusively by appearance, while keeping in mind what I’ll “need” to clear the story.
When I was collecting for Swap Force, I got one of each swap power, whichever I thought looked the coolest. I was also collecting any Core figures that I thought looked cool and trying to get a selection of figures that would give me one of each element if I picked up an old copy of Spyro’s Adventure and/or Giants,
In SuperChargers, I picked out my favourite of each element and am just getting those characters and their respective vehicles. But I’m a bit less picky now, since element gates aren’t in the game, so I don’t really plan to get either tech character, as I don’t like how either of them looks and I don’t really need them anyway. And I have a tech vehicle anyway, in the form of Barrel Blaster.
I’m in the same camp as May Cybele Mabie. I choose almost purely by looks, but I do usually make sure I have at least one of every element for the special gates. I’m only up to Trap Team at the moment myself
I am generally not interested in color variants that don’t get expressed in game play. I like the Legendary Skylanders because they look different in the game than their vanilla counterparts. Until Superchargers, the kids and I have always tried to seek out each playable version available. We have what I consider a complete collection through the Trap Team. Our position is that there is little hope of managing to collect every possible color variant without a ridiculous expense and even then, what can you do with them except look at them. This started with Pumpkin Eye-Brawl, who looked very cool but came in only as a normal Eye-Brawl. Lots of disappointment in the house that day. Superchargers left a lot to be desired for my older boys who felt that many of the figures (in particular, the returning figures) looked like they would be more at home with a hamburger and french fries. So we ended our Skylander craze. However, my 4 year old liked some of the characters and really wanted to do the races… so, we ended up with a Wii version of the game (he loves Donkey Kong) for Christmas. Unfortunately Santa also brought Lego Dimensions for the older boys and the game wars ensued. Super chargers was only about $30-$40 so I grabbed a PS4 copy so the little one could race with Daddy in his sanctuary and leave the big boys alone… For the first time ever a Skylander from one game DID NOT WORK on another game! Donkey Kong was a huge disappointment. My boys have been leveling up their Skylanders at home and taking their favorites to friend’s houses to play for years and it never mattered what game system their friends had. We loved that and it made the game bigger than your personal collection. I also need to consider whether there are playable variants coming. Picking a path is such a awful experience unless you know you can go a different direction with the lightcore or dark version when it comes out. I can’t justify buying to of something just to do that so we pick paths carefully for Skylanders without alts. We were thrilled to see the new Eon’s elite figures for this reason alone. Poor Ghost Roaster is a favorite and we’ve only seen one upgrade path before. The disappointments with Superchargers have made us more selective now than ever… I regret buying any version of the new Pop-Fizz each time I sit down to play… everything about him (stupid looking figure to dumb bubble attack… even that ridiculous looking boat) is just a terrible crime against that character. Fiesta looks cool but we all hate the way he walks in the game… I could go on. Knowing what we learned the hard way so far, would have seriously impacted out buying choices with this installment. Other factors? Stats are, in my opinion, a challenge. We’ve learned to change the way we play when a certain character is on the portal… the differences make it more fun. They don’t affect the decision to purchase as much as functionality, looks and powers.
Well, I am not a “Hardcore Collector” and buy everything under the Skylander’s sun like pillows, posters, etc… but I do try to collect all the figures. Unless it is a variant that is going to cost me more than $200 I am going to try to own it. At the same time I want to do it as cheaply as I can and still own these figures. The information that I need is the same that you provide already. Dates the figure will be released for sale and the quantity of these figures. It upsets me to have to go to Amazon or Ebay and buy a figure for $50 or more when I could have gotten it at the store for $16 if I knew the rarity of the figure.
