Skylanders Portal Compatibility

Each year we get a new Skylanders game and each year a new Portal is made. So the question is not only which Portal do I have, but which Portal(s) can I use?

While it's fairly easy to explain Portal Compatibility, my goal is and has always been to make the information as easy to understand as possible. So I will break it all down for you.

To start:

I used to say…

It will always be to your advantage to buy the newest Portal available.

So far all Portals are backwards compatible. This means that the newest Portal will work with all the older games.

While this holds true for the first few games, Trap Team and SuperChargers have started breaking these rules.

Another factor that we need to address is compatibility between consoles. Generally speaking, the Wii, Wii U, PS3, and PS4 Portals are all interchangeable. It is only the Xbox 360 and Xbox One Portals that are console specific.

If you're still confused though, take a look at the compatibility charts below.

As the charts will show, the Trap Team Portal is currently the most versatile of all the Portals, but it definitely gets crowded when placing multiple figures on the Portal. I hope this helps you answer some of your questions.
