Skylanders Magic Items
The Magic Items category is a broad category that basically covers any item that can be placed on the Portal that is not a Skylander or a Trap.
A handful of new Magic Items are released with each game. They are typically packaged in Adventure, Battle, or Expansion Packs, but there are few other miscellaneous items. Many of the Magic Items have similar functions, but they are executed differently on the screen. So if you've ever wondered, “What do the Magic Items do?”, keep on reading…
Each Magic Item can only be used once per level. Magic Items are typically the most powerful in the game with which they were released, but most will still function in later games. Any compatibility issues will be noted below.
Below you will find brief descriptions of what each Magic Item does in the game.

Spyro's Adventure Magic Items
Anvil RainEffect: Causes anvils to rain from the sky for approximately 15 seconds.
Darklight CryptEffect: As a Magic Item, the Darklight Crypt sends a swarm of ghosts to attack all enemies on the screen. Since it deals out 999 damage, it effectively defeats all enemies.
In Spyro's Adventure and Giants, the Darklight Crypt will also unlock an additional level to play.
Dragon's PeakEffect: As a Magic Item, Dragon's Peak sends a rain of fireballs to attack all enemies on the screen. Since it deals out 999 damage, it effectively defeats all enemies.
In Spyro's Adventure and Giants, Dragon's Peak will also unlock an additional level to play.
Empire of IceEffect: As a Magic Item, the Empire of Ice drops ice shards to attack all enemies on the screen. Since it deals out 999 damage, it effectively defeats all enemies.
In Spyro's Adventure and Giants, the Empire of Ice will also unlock an additional level to play.
Ghost SwordsEffect: Two floating swords appear around your Skylander. These swords will automatically attack nearby enemies for approximately 45 seconds.
Healing ElixirEffect: Refills your Skylander's health at a rate of 30 per second. It lasts for approximately 15 seconds giving you a total of 450 health.
Hidden TreasureEffect: Gives you an on-screen radar consisting of 1-3 circles. The more circles you have, the closer you are to the buried treasure.
Pirate SeasEffect: As a Magic Item, Pirate Seas rains cannonballs on all enemies on the screen. Since it deals out 999 damage, it effectively defeats all enemies.
In Spyro's Adventure and Giants, Pirate Seas will also unlock an additional level to play.
Sky-Iron ShieldEffect: This shield will increase your Skylander's armor or defensive strength for a limited time.
Sparx DragonflyEffect: Your trusty pal Sparx the Dragonfly will appear and fight alongside you (until his timer runs out).
Time TwisterEffect: All movement on-screen is slowed down except for that of your Skylanders. This will allow you to get in a few extra hits or simply run away if you so choose. The effect lasts for approximately 30 seconds.
Volcanic VaultEffect: As a Magic Item, the Volcanic Vault sends a rain of fireballs to attack all enemies on the screen.
In Spyro's Adventure and Giants, the Volcanic Vault will also unlock an additional PvP Battle Arena.
Winged BootsEffect: The Winged Boots give your Skylander a boost in speed for a limited time.
Giants Magic Items
Dragonfire CannonEffect: As a Magic Item, the Dragonfire Cannon can be used to fire cannonballs at enemies.
In Skylanders Giants, the Dragonfire Cannon will also unlock two additional Battle Arenas: Docks of Doom and Frost Fight.
If you have have the exclusive Golden Dragonfire Cannon, it will also unlock a third Battle Arena called Ultimate Wheel of Power.
Platinum Treasure ChestEffect: Gives you an on-screen radar consisting of 1-3 circles. The more circles you have, the closer you are to the buried treasure.
This is essentially the same item as the Hidden Treasure, but this “variant” was only released with the Skylanders Battlegrounds Starter Pack for iOS.
Scorpion Striker CatapultEffect: As a Magic Item, the Scorpion Striker Catapult can be used to fire spiked metal balls at enemies. These projectiles explode when they hit enemies.
In Skylanders Giants, the Scorpion Striker Catapult will also unlock two additional Battle Arenas: Cliff Dive Crags and Metal Hive.
SWAP Force Magic Items
Arkeyan CrossbowEffect: As a Magic Item, the Arkeyan Crossbow can be used to lob its crossbow bolt at enemies. Additionally, a residual wave will wash over nearby enemies damaging them as well.
In Skylanders SWAP Force, the Arkeyan Crossbow will also unlock one additional Battle Arena (Treacherous Beach) as well as four new Survival Arenas (Sand Castle, Beach Breach, Troll Beach Attack, and Chompy Tsunami).
Battle HammerEffect: The Battle Hammer follows your Skylander around. When you attack it will pound the ground adding more damage to your attack.
Fiery ForgeEffect: As a Magic Item, the Fiery Forge will follow your Skylander. If an enemy gets too close it will pour molten metal on them.
In Skylanders SWAP Force, the Fiery Forge will also unlock the Fiery Forge Battle Arena and the Fiery Forge Ring-Out Arena.
Groove MachineEffect: The Groove Machine will follow your Skylander around playing music. When enemies get too close they will begin to dance allowing you to defeat them with ease.
Platinum SheepEffect: The Platinum Sheep provides your character with a sheep disguise. You will not be able to attack while you are a sheep, but the bad guys won't attack you and you will regain health.
Sheep Wreck IslandEffect: In Skylanders SWAP Force this will unlock the Sheep Wreck Island level.
Additionally, in Skylanders SWAP Force, it will unlock four Arena levels: Vortex Banquet, Cyclops Makeover, Sheep Mage Rage, and Chunky Chompies.
Sky DiamondEffect: The Sky Diamond provides you with an extra way to rack up the much needed Gold. With the Sky Diamond active you will receive diamonds for each enemy that you defeat.
Tower of TimeEffect: In Skylanders SWAP Force, the Tower of Time will unlock the level of the same name.
UFO HatEffect: The UFO Hat is just another Hat to collect there's nothing really special about it. However, it was not available to collect in the game, you need to unlock it using the Target Pre-Order Card.
In Skylanders SWAP Force, the UFO Hat gives your Skylander:
- +9 Speed
- +15 Elemental Power
- +40 Maximum Health
Trap Team Magic Items
Hand of FateEffect: The Hand of Fate will attack nearby enemies causing large amounts of damage and stunning the enemy if it is not defeated.
Midnight MuseumEffect: In Skylanders Trap Team, the Midnight Museum will unlock the level of the same name.
Mirror of MysteryEffect: In Skylanders Trap Team, the Mirror of Mystery will unlock the level of the same name.
Nightmare ExpressEffect: In Skylanders Trap Team, the Nightmare Express will unlock the level of the same name.
Piggy BankEffect: The Piggy Bank will reward your Skylander with extra Gold after defeating each enemy. (This is very similar to the effect of the Sky Diamond in SWAP Force.)
Rocket RamEffect: The Rocket Ram causes numerous rockets to fall from the sky. These rocket will explode as they hit the ground.
Sunscraper SpireEffect: In Skylanders Trap Team, the Sunscraper Spire will unlock the level of the same name.
Tiki SpeakyEffect: The Tiki Speaky follows you around until it finds a nearby enemy. Then it will hover directly above the enemy and shock them with a lightning bolt.
